About

Self-taught Australian artist David Willis has combined a lifelong passion for painting with extensive travel, recording people and places across six continents.

His interest in painting local people began in Papua New Guinea during the 1960s and 70s, when the territory was administered by Australia. He went on to travel through Central and South America, painting Indigenous communities. He then established himself in Oman, where he produced works for royal palaces, government buildings, and ministers.

He now makes his home in Broome, Western Australia. The Kimberley landscape, its seascapes, and its wildlife feature throughout his recent work, but his principal subject is the horse in action, whether droving in the cattle industry, competing at rodeos, or running wild.

More recently, he has begun working in sculpture, in both clay and wood.
